I must tell you what I have been reading because it does bother me so. I read
Winesburg, Ohio and
Watchmen. Both are good for different reasons, though, like an inconsiderate friend, it goes without saying. One is a collection of vignettes on the inhabitants of a town. The other a collection of comics on the rise and fall of superheroes. Both, though, are about the rise and fall. What I really liked about Winesburg is the set-up. Anderson says its a grotesque show, but the things on display aren't bearded women or hair-bodied men. There's a Doctor who fills his pockets with scraps of paper upon which he writes poetry and philosophy. But the scraps have turned to balls, long forgetting any literary value. There's an over-zealous farmer whose hopes and prayers have turned against him. There's the town beauty, Helen White. The town reporter, George Willard. It's not a complicated book by any means, but I feel I need to read and re-read it to get the full picture. And to remember each of the characters. There's so many! Gawd!
I am now reading Goethe's
The Sorrows of Young Werther and hope to read
Faust next. But I have so much I want to read right now that my mind is torn. If this were my only trouble I'd be in heaven with St. Libros devouring coconuts and rocking in my hammock.
